Colony Upgrades Guide

Upgrade boards are where long-term power comes from in Build An Ant Empire. Ants matter, but ants without Egg luck, sell value, and slots stall hard. This guide explains each upgrade type, the recommended early priority, and how to time purchases with codes and better rarities from the tier list.

You buy upgrades from the in-world upgrade boards. Each level costs more than the last, so misordered spending hurts more as prices climb.

The four upgrade families

UpgradeWhat it improvesWhy it matters
Colony expansionMore room / slotsLets you field multiple producers
Food valueCash per food box soldMultiplies every collect → sell trip
Ant speedProduction rateMore boxes per minute from placed ants
Egg luckBetter ant odds at QueenRaises rarity ceiling of buys
Egg rollsMore rolls at Ant QueenMore chances per session to hit keepers

Egg luck and Egg rolls are both Queen-side investments. Expansion, food value, and ant speed are colony-side investments. You need both sides, but not at equal priority on day one.

Early priority (follow this)

1. Egg luck + Egg rolls first
2. Food value + Colony expansion next
3. Ant speed after producers and sell value look healthy

Why luck and rolls lead

Rolling is free; buying is not. If odds stay poor, Cash drains into Commons that barely move income. Egg luck shifts rolls toward higher rarities (including Legendary, Divine, and OP at the top). Egg rolls simply give more attempts. Together they feed the Getting Started loop with ants worth placing.

Why food value comes before endless speed

Food value increases Cash per box. That improves every ant you already own. Ant speed increases box rate. Speed is good, but speeding up low-value boxes is a weaker Cash engine than raising value, especially before luck upgrades land better ants.

When to buy expansion

Buy colony expansion when you have (or expect) multiple ants worth placing and your single starter slot is the bottleneck. Expansion too early fills space with D-tier Commons. Expansion too late leaves good rolls sitting unplaced. Ideal timing: after a couple of luck/roll levels and once collect/sell is automatic muscle memory.

Midgame board planning

Once early priorities are online:

  • Keep dipping into Egg luck whenever a level is affordable during surplus.
  • Raise food value in step with new high-rarity placements.
  • Expand slots in chunks when you are actually slot-capped.
  • Buy ant speed to tighten the collect cycle once boxes are valuable.

Use Cash code windows to purchase several levels in one burst. A fifteen-minute boost is wasted if you only AFK; it shines when you sell constantly and dump into boards between trips.

Upgrades vs items shop

Do not confuse boards with center-map consumables. Boards are permanent progression. Jellies and mutation potions are one-time (or timed) effects listed in items shop. A $10k Normal Speed Jelly can help a grind session; it does not replace ant speed levels or food value levels. A $5.1Qi Starlight potion should never be your goal while Egg luck is still level one.

Upgrades vs mutations

Mutations multiply EFF on individual ants. Boards multiply the whole colony economy and roll quality. Sequence:

  1. Boards for luck/rolls/value/slots
  2. Better rarity ants into those slots
  3. Mutations on keepers

Skipping to mutations first creates expensive ants on a fragile economy.

Practical spending rules

  • If your last five buys were Commons, buy luck/rolls before another cosmetic flex.
  • If boxes feel frequent but Cash is low, buy food value.
  • If you own more good ants than slots, buy expansion.
  • If value and rarity are fine but trips feel slow, buy ant speed or use a cheap jelly.
  • If a board level costs more than your entire fifteen-minute code income, grind another cycle or redeem a fresh active code first.

Synergy with Index and mounts

Index milestones reward discovery - claim them, but do not rearrange upgrade order around Index alone. Mounts do not replace ant speed boards: training consumes the ant win or lose, mounts are only slightly faster than walking, and teleport-to-nest already covers return travel. Keep Cash on boards and ants.

Example purchase timeline

Minutes 0 - 20: Place any starter ant, redeem codes, buy first Egg luck / Egg rolls levels.
Minutes 20 - 45: Add food value; expand to a second slot when you have two decent ants.
Hour 2+: Alternate luck with value; expand when capped; sprinkle ant speed; only then eye Bubblegum-tier mutations.

Adjust timing to your Cash rate, but keep the relative order stable.

Upgrade discipline is the quiet skill in Build An Ant Empire. Players who always buy the next shiny board without a plan stay Common forever. Players who fund luck, rolls, value, and slots in order watch Divine and OP ants finally have an economy worthy of them.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

What is the best upgrade order in Build An Ant Empire?

Prioritize Egg luck and Egg rolls first, then food value and colony expansion. Buy ant speed after your ants and sell value are already solid.

Do upgrade prices increase each level?

Yes. Each level on the upgrade boards costs more than the previous one, so early mis-spends get expensive fast.

Is colony expansion better than Egg luck?

Not early. Expansion without luck fills slots with weak Commons. Unlock better odds first, then expand when you have ants worth placing.

Should I buy ant speed or food value first?

Food value usually comes first because it raises Cash per box. Speed helps later once boxes are already worth selling.

Can codes help with upgrades?

Yes. Fifteen-minute Cash codes are ideal for buying multiple board levels while you continuously collect and sell.
